Posted on November 2, 2017 0

Asthma is the most common lung disease. In children, it affects close to ten percent of those under seventeen years. This condition is famous for the burden of disease it imposes on society as well as the complications it causes. Asthma is usually a chronic condition. It affects the bronchial airways causing inflammation and constriction. This constriction results from the hyperactivity of the airways. The good news is that this disease is manageable. The primary modes of treatment involve medication and physical therapy. In this article, we take a more detailed look at asthma and how to manage it.

Symptoms

The symptoms exhibited by asthmatic patients occur due to the pathophysiology of the disease. These signs and symptoms include a running nose, headache, dyspnea, itchy throat, thick and springy sputum, chest tightness and a wheeze. These symptoms result from the release of certain chemicals which have effects on the airway

Causes

Several things cause asthma. These range from hereditary factors, environmental factors to other factors surrounding the birth and life of a child. These factors include low birth weight, poor diet, a viral infection, early age antibiotic use and premature birth. Other than these factors, asthma is triggered by certain things. These include cold air, severe exercise, pollen, and dust mites.

Treatment

To attain effective treatment, asthma needs to be treated using both medication and physical therapy. The medical treatment involves the use of beta two agonists. These drugs provide relief for the symptoms. Physical therapy includes some options. These are breathing techniques, physical training, and respiratory muscle training. It is best to work with a trained professional through your patient’s physical therapy for successful treatment.
