This article does a great job of highlighting an area that many are dealing with in their own families. As we have an aging population who may be developing cognitive impairment, how do we ensure that they remain safe, that their doctors are aware of what’s truly happening at home and allow children or family members be involved?
It is so important if someone is experiencing cognitive decline, that their doctor be aware. If a diagnosis of dementia is given, please help that person start planning for the future. While cognitively able, a will needs to be completed or reviewed. An Advanced Directive for Healthcare as well as Financial Power of Attorney should be in place. Estate planning should also be done. There comes a time when it’s too late to change these things if someone’s mental capabilities are no longer present. It can be difficult on both parties to bring these things up, but they need to be dealt with while able. Actually, everybody should have these in place, not just someone with memory impairments!
Take the time to read this article. Hopfully you’ll find it as enlightening as we did!
