A stroke kills over 100 million nerve cells. Thankfully, we have over 200 billion! The good news about this is that there are plenty of cells left to make new connections. This development of new connections is like rewiring the brain.
A colleague recently shared this example that I think highlights the process of neuroplasticity (rewiring). Think of a lightbulb at the end of your foot and assume that there are 6 wires connecting it to your brain. If a stroke destroys 3 of these wires, the lightbulb will still shine, but faintly. Through appropriate rehabilitation, the three remaining connections can get stronger and new connections can be made, making the bulb brighter!
A person can continue to make improvements in their recovery from a stroke for years afterwards. We see people make improvements even after 10 years! It takes lots of repetition and practice – more than most people perform. Think of stroke survivors as athletes – athletes practice daily for long periods of time in order to improve their skills. The same goes for stroke survivors!
