The Importance of Exercise and Wellness for Seniors

Posted on October 10, 2013 0

seniors-walkingExercise and wellness are important to practice and maintain, no matter what age you are. Exercise plays a vital role in keeping older people vital, engaged, and healthy. It’s one of the most important things you can do, no matter what age or shape, to improve your health and feel good. Even a moderate amount of exercise several times a week benefits the body and mind for the better. Being active is much healthier than being inactive, which can result in worse health and even double the chances of developing heart disease. No matter what age you are, there are always resources, options, and even small things that you can do to work a fitness routine or some activity into your life.

Options for Exercising

If you live at home, many options spring to mind. Many people belong to gyms and go there weekly to work out, lift weights, and participate in exercise classes provided by the gym. It’s a monthly cost, but it’s also convenient to be able to go and work out whenever you want without paying a lot of money to fit a treadmill in your home. Alternatively, it’s relatively simple and cost-effective to purchase a set of dumbbells from your local sporting goods warehouse store. Start with some light weights that are 5 lbs. or 10 lbs. and purchase a video to work out with or play one on the Internet. Doing basic curls, slowly lifting a weight toward your chin, and doing repetitions is a simple exercise that can be implemented easily with a 5 pound dumbbell. This will build muscle tone, work your arms, and help blood circulation.

Another option to pursue wellness is by walking around the block or a park to get some exercise that is easy to access, is free, is a good alternative to the gym, and is also a good option if you enjoy being around trees and nature. Additionally, walking around allows you a relaxing experience that is also a very healthy way to exercise. Even though walking is not fast or may seem that beneficial, it’s actually a great way to pursue wellness that is calming and beneficial to your health.

The Benefits of Exercise on Health

Physical activity is proven to have a positive effect on wellness, delaying disease, improving mood, lowering stress, and maintaining or improving cognitive health. Every part of your body benefits from exercise, whether it’s the extra oxygen pumping into your blood from moving, the reduction of the risk for heart disease, or the flushing of toxins out of the body. Every system in the body benefits from doing exercise, whether in a class form or exercising in different ways on your own. Tai Chi and swimming are great options for exercise that are low impact but proven to be extremely beneficial for the body as a whole, as well as being joint and impact friendly. These types of classes also offer great options for alternative ways to exercise your body and mind while engaging with the world around you.
